01/09/10 - Seahorse FOR SALE
It is with great sadness that I am selling my beloved
Seahorse. She is an incredible boat and will provide many happy adventures for
her new owner. A complete inventory is available as well as a comprehensive
survey carried out in 2009.

29/08/10 - Dartmouth Regatta
So it's been nearly a week since I got home and I havn't had a chance to sort anything! It was straight into Dartmouth Regatta where I have been racing with Mum and Dad and family friends Nikki and Nick which was great fun. We managed to win our class to so a great week for us all!
It is just hitting me that I am actually home, Regatta is over and there is a lot to do. I have literally just left my beloved Seahorse on her mooring since I got in, with everything still on board so tomorrow I will get back onboard to get all my stuff off. Incredibly sad to even think about it, the trip really will be over then. Anyway lot's more to focus on now, got to get my fitness back up for the Artemis Academy trial I have on September 13-15 and also need to start organising what I am going to do with The Seahorse. I have my Baltic Wharf loan to pay back now, so anyone interested in giving Seahorse a caring home and another adventure do get in touch...
24/08/10 - Home
Wow! Yesterday was a very special day, to be thrown out of my own little world and back into the reality of life at home, with friends and family was very bizarre, but also very exciting! There was an amazing welcoming for me at the RDYC which was fantastic, from junior sailors competing in the dinghy regatta at the moment, to friends, family and my incredible sponsors, without all of whom I could have never achieved my goal. I even got to spray champagne, which was incredible! But I think I need to refine my technique a bit more!!
Regatta starts soon, so life back home is very busy, which is perfect. It is also my parents 25th wedding anniversay today, so we are preparing for a big celebration this evening! Very much looking forward to catching up with everyone over the next week, and settling back into life at home. There is a lot to sort out, but I am very keen to get back out on the water and competing again soon.
23/08/10 - Salcome to DARTMOUTH!
Okay I am currently sitting in Salcombe and will be leaving around 1000 this morning to get round start point before the tide turns to strong against me, I should be arriving by Dartmouth castles around 1400 this afternoon if all goes to plan. The forecast is for strong SW'lies which is fine for me as I will be going with it, but Start Bay isn't very nice in these conditions as it's very exposed so anyone coming to see me in please make sure you are properly equipped and ready!
See you all soon!
22/08/10 - Falmouth to Salcombe
With more oncoming gales I have sailed to Salcombe to set myself up for coming in around lunch time tomorrow. The weather isn't ideal but hopefully I will have a window to get round Start Point and home!!
19/08/10 - The Padstow to Falmouth Epic!
After
arriving in Padstow I was ready to set up camp for a few days to really
enjoy this beautiful place. However the weather had other ideas, so I
decided to get down to Falmouth before the gales we have now. I am glad
I made the decision, but bloody hell was it an epic leg!
Started off
with strong force 5 upwind stuff for 9 hours all the way to St Ives,
then the breeze died a bit and the sea flattened so I put the engine on
to recharge the batteries. At 10 o'clock it just stuttered and
stopped, without any hint or reason why. I tried restarting it but
couldn't, so because running the engine is the only way I can charge my
batteries for autopilot, instruments and lights etc, I went into power
saving mode. I looked at turning back, but with the gales coming I was
keen to get round to Falmouth so decided to press on. I spent the
whole night helming from 10 until 8 the next morning to just keep the
boat moving, never going above 3 knots the whole night. Exhausting
stuff.
The leg was already billed as
a big one for me, Lands End at night and upwind, so to add the engine
issue and the un-forecast lack of pressure, not to mention the
impending Force 7 Southerly if I didn't get in in time meant I really
had to just sail fast. Which was great, for once I had something to
race, not another boat, but the weather! Once we rounded Longships the
breeze filled in and we ran for our lives heading East sharpish! It took
us all night to sail the 10 miles from the top of Lands End to the
bottom, ouch! Anyway in now, so rest up until Monday for my last
passage home, a sad thought. Engineer coming tomorrow to look at
engine.
16/08/10 - Arrived into Milford Haven, Dale
Bay.
After a 26 hour passage I have finally arrived into
Dale bay in Milford Haven this afternoon. I am currently tied up alongside the
drying pontoon so I can have a walk around ashore as it is high tide, before
going onto a floating pontoon out in the middle of the river for the evening.
Then it will be an early start to head down to Padstow, setting me up for my
last few legs for home.
I plan to be back on the 23 August around mid-day, so
today is officially my last week of the trip. And as of tomorrow I will be back
in the West country and familiar waters... Just thinking about the trip being
over makes me very sad, what an amazing adventure I have had. (Am having!!)
15/08/10 - Snowdon, done.
Onto Milford Haven.
Yesterday I completed my last climb. It was a great day
as my brother and Mum and Dad came to do the climb with me. It's the first time
I have seen Ross since the start of the trip and over a month since I saw Mum
and Dad in Eyemouth so was great to catch up with everything.
The weather delivered thick fog and no stunning views for
us at the top. But it was a great day and I am looking forward now to my last
long passage of the trip, 120 miles to Milford Haven. Then from there its down
to Padstow and the West Country!!
13/08/10 - Arrived in
Holyhead
After a rough passage I have finally arrived in Holyhead.
It was so good to leave Whitehaven after being stuck there for 5 nights. I left
at 0000, and it was pretty hectic at the entrance with huge waves. Locking out
in the dark was also fun, but as we said goodbye to land the waves became longer
and life became more comfortable onboard. It was a reach to start with, and then
a broadening reach throughout the day. The wind picked up to a strong Force 6,
but going with the wind and waves meant it was possible, if but a bit
uncomfortable!
Snowdon tomorrow!
10/08/10 - Storm bound in Whitehaven
My plan was to be leaving Whitehaven yesterday evening and arriving in Holyhead this afternoon. But a Force 6 from the South West, (exactly where I want to go!) meant I stayed put to wait for the North Westerly today. However the Force 4/5 which was forecast has now been up to Force 6/7, so it's looking like I will be staying here for another night. With the busy shipping coming out of Liverpool and the forecast rough sea's around Great Orme Head I think it best to sit tight for a bit longer. Myself and the Seahorse have come a long way, and I don't want to be putting her in any boat breaking conditions by choice!
08/08/10 - Scafell Pike, done!
Okay so I am now officially 2 mountains down! Fantastic! And by Thursday I hope to have them all ticked off which will be great. Again the weather was rubbish, no view at the top and thick fog meant I got a bit disorientated on the way up. It was not as busy as Ben Nevis climb, and I ended up on the wrong path, but I found my way up and managed to follow the cairns which was great. I didn't feel very tired at the end of it; the whole walk took me just under 3 and a half hours including a rest at the top so I am pretty pleased with that. Looking forward to Snowdon walk now, rumour has it some friends and family are coming to join me for it! Awesome!
07/08/10 - Campbeltown to Whitehaven via Portpartrick
Wow, the leg from Campbeltown to Portpatrick was tough! Probably the hardest leg I have done mentally. It was upwind the whole way, I left at 9 in the morning and didn’t arrive until 9 that evening. The weather was horrendous, big waves stopping us dead, heavy heavy rain and strong tides that were against us at key points. At one point I also had about 10 ships near me as the fog descended, I wasn't a happy bunny and I certainly was relieved to get in that’s for sure! I got a few hours rest in Portpatrick before leaving at 3 the next morning to head to Whitehaven.
What a contrast! I was met with a beautiful morning, and had north westerly winds, meaning I had the kite up the whole way. The sun shone and we averaged around 6 knots with the tide which was ideal. Meant I got into the lock before low water, just! Meaning I had time to sort everything out for Scafell climb which was great.
05/08/10 - Campbletown
After reluctantly leaving Portavadie and there awesome showers I headed down Kilbrannan sound, past Arran to Campbletown. It was a great sail, a strong F4/5 off the land, meaning a nice broad reach to upwind as the wind backed throughout the day. The NW forecast for tomorrow looks good, meaning I should arrive in Portpatrick in good time to set off early Saturday morning to Whitehaven. I will arrive in Whitehaven in the evening on Saturday, and will then tackle the mighty Scafell on Sunday if all goes to plan!
04/08/10 - The Crinan Canal
After a days rest at Oban to sort everything out ashore, dry clothes and generally spending time on sorting my life out, it was off to Crinan for my passage through the canal. I was very exciting about doing a canal on the trip as it was something different, and something I had never done before. I arrived in good time thanks to the strong tides which helped me through the Corrryveckan so went through the first 2 manned locks at the entrance, and tied up for the evening alongside a pontoon by the first set of locks you work yourself.
Being on my own my plan was to wait for an unsuspecting yacht to arrive early the next morning, and ambush them! I couldn't work the locks on my own so I needed to find someone to tag along with. I was extremely lucky to meet Alan and his family, who let me ride along with them and their pilot throughout the day. They were a lovely family, and there two boys, Bruce and Rory were good fun also. We got through the canal by 1500, so I headed for Portavadie under there recommendation. The marina surprised me, they have fantastic facilities there, with a restuarant, chandlery, apartments and best of all, top bannana showers!
01/08/10 - Ben Nevis, done!
Today was a great day, the first and biggest climb of the trip is now done! The weather quite frankly was awful, rained all day so we got absolutely soaked through. We didn't see a thing either due to the low cloud, meaning it was simply a job of getting up and back down again, with no stunning view as a reward, shame. I still had a great day though, although maybe my feet would not agree with me! Hopefully they will mend enough by next weekend to tackle Scarfell, quite a few blisters at the moment, to pop or not to pop?!
I hope I can dry my boots by then to! We intially planned to go up the North face, however due to the bad weather decided to take the 'tourist' route. Because of the detour we actually walked a few more miles, but it also meant we had to cross a stream or 'burn' as they are called up here, meaning my boots got soaked! Anyway the 'offpiste' bit getting back to the other track was great fun walking through marshy grass with hidden streams etc, certainly kept us on our toes! I would just like to thank Neil for coming with me, we had a great laugh and he played guide very well indeed so thank you! Right onto Whitehaven now for Scarfell!
31/07/10 - In Oban with internet signal!
For the first time in over 2 weeks I actually have proper internet signal to carry out some much needed updates to the website. Due to the remote nature of the West Coast of Scotland I have not been able to connect so I would just like to apologise now!
It has been a very wet few weeks, the few pictures I have managed to post have probably shown a lot of fog, grey and damp conditions! It's a real shame as this West Coast is supposibly one of the most beautiful places to sail, if you can see the coastline that is!
Anyway I have made it to Oban now, where I am leaving the boat for a night to Climb Ben Nevis tomorrow. It's the first place that I have stopped in quite a while that has showers, water, electricity, fuel and a chance to provision so I am going to make the most of it! Hopefully I will get a day of sunshine to dry eveything out and wash my clothes and the boat, everything is damp due to the salty conditions. Now I am back to more populated areas I should also be able to update more frequently to, a report on the Nevis climb coming tomorrow, with new pictures and videos of my time in the dark (no internet!) being uploaded as I speak! (Type)
25/07/10 - Stuck in Loch Inver due to bad weather
I tried to leave for Loch Gairloch this morning however had to turn back for the first time this trip. I'm gutted. The big sea's and thick fog were what made me turn back, but strong Westerlies going Southwest later would mean putting a lot of load on a small boat as I would be beating the whole way, there is a long way to go on this trip still and while annoyed I had to turn back, I think I made the right decision. Anyway, hopefully I will be able to catch up with a few things onboard and upload some videos and pictures etc.
24/07/10 - Scrabster to Loch Inver via Loch Eriboll and Kindlochbervie
Sorry for the lack of updates over the last few days, I have not been able to connect to the internet in any of the places I have visited. All being loch's, quite frankly in the middle of nowhere! I have not been able to log on and update, I have a weak signal here however so will try my best!
The north coast and west coast has provided an amazing backdrop to my sailing over the last few days, when the weather is nice it's absolutely stunning, however I have learnt that up here it can change in an instant. More than once fog has come down within minutes reducing visibility to less than 100 meters, not very nice!
Anyway still ploughing on and hope to make Ben Nevis by next weekend. I am trying to upload a new video and some new pictures as I type so be sure to check out the gallery and youtube site! Bye for now!

21/07/10 - Peterhead to Scrabster via Wick
I am currently sitting in Scrabster after a bit of a mamoth leg from Peterhead. I stopped off in Wick to get some sleep and to wait for the tide and then carried on through the Pentland Firth. I arrived in Wick around 2230 and then after a small rest left at 0330 in the morning to ensure I arrived at Pentland at slack water. When I left the fog was clearing, but visbility was still bad, it got so bad I actually turned back at one point to try again in next tidal and weather window, but it then immediatly cleared so I gave it another shot.
The tide can run at over 12 knots in the Pentland Firth and I had heard a lot about its fearsome reputation so I was pretty nervous about this leg in particular. I aimed to arrive at slack water which we did, but the wind went Westerly not North Westerly as forecast meaning I had to beat all the way to Scrabster. The effect of a Force 4 occasionally 5 wind against a massive tide also resulted in pretty big overfalls, but nothing the mighty 'Seahorse' couldn't manage!
Looking ahead now I have the beautiful North West coast of Scotland and Ben Nevis! I am looking to climb on the 31st July, 1 August weekend so anyone who wants to make the trip up to join me is more than welcome so get in contact!

19/07/10 - Eyemouth to Peterhead
My 3rd night passage in a row and the 4th of the trip so far. Feeling pretty tired this morning! Had a great rest mind in Eyemouth and was feeling really charged and ready to go when I left Eyemouth late morning. It was so good to be back out on the water, and I was met with a strong force 5 occ 6 from the West meaning I power reached at 6 knots all the way to Peterhead. I had my best run of the trip so far, averaging 6 knots over a 12 hour period, awesome!
Meant I made it in before the tide turned against me at Rattery Head which was fantastic mentally, nothing I hate more than fighting the tide at snails pace for the last few miles of a trip! Off to Wick tomorrow morning, 70nm, and then the short hop round to Scrabster. My plan is to get there by Tuesday so that if the low hits I am positioned well to get out of the north of Scotland sharpish with my next weather window! As I round Cape Wrath for Scrabster I will be starting to head south again for home, a sad thought. Maybe I will have to do smaller legs to prolong my adventure a bit longer, I don't want it to end!

14/07/10 - Storm bound in Eyemouth
As many have you may of seen on the TV, the weather isn't great up here in Scotland! Just from the pictures of The Open golf tournament held just up the road at St Andrew's you get some idea of the conditions!
So I am waiting until the weather calms before pressing further north. I hope to get underway on Saturday to Stonehaven or Peterhead, and then up to Wick. So for now I will take some rest and crack on with a few job's I need to do onboard and regroup before the next stop point, Ben Nevis!
13/07/10 - Whitby to Eyemouth
I docked out at 1600 hours on the 12th from Whitby on a night passage bound for Eyemouth. I was keen to do another leg as I will now be stuck here at least until the weekend due to the low pressure system's going over here in Scotland.
Had to motor for a lot of the trip as hardly a breath, but a pod of dolphins came to see me in the middle of the night which was absolutely amazing, one of the many highlights of the trip so far.
Time to rest up now, crack on with a few boat job's and other bits to. I have got a bit behind with video's, logs and pictures to so will try and catch up loading all that up online to.

12/07/10 - Southwold to Whitby
The longest leg of the trip so far and the longest solo passage I have ever done in my life. Pretty much sum's up the trip!
I felt every emotion possible on this leg, from contentness, to joy, to frustration and at times anger! The orginal plan was to go to Grimsby but I was having far to much fun and really enjoying myself so decided to carry on. I was really in the groove by then and life onboard was easy.
Those were the good times, the last few miles into Whitby however were probably the most frustrating few miles I have ever done in my life! I hadn't slept in over 36 hours, or eaten properly due to the strong upwind conditions from Flamborough Head onwards so was feeling a bit worse for wear, but then the wind went further north, exactly were I wanted to go, and the tide went against meaning I was only making 2.5 knots over the ground and just over 1 mile an hour towards Whitby! The last 11 miles took me 8 hours! I wasn't impressed! Great to be in though and the showers are awesome, always a perk!
Off to Eyemouth this evening for another night passage (100 miles) as I think I will be stuck there for a bit due to the low's going over Scotland, so I am keen to press on. It will give me a good few days rest after the East Coast slog and will enable me to catch up on a few boat jobs that need sorting to.

07/07/10 - Ramsgate to Harwich
The Thames Estuary! Everyone was telling me that this was going to be a very challenging and tough leg for me, but the weather couldn't have been kinder. (Well maybe a bit more sun would have been nice!) The water was flat calm, allowing me to take the shortest route over Foulgers Gat, then it was up Black Deep, over the shoals and alongside at Harwich. I was surprised by how little shipping I saw too.. All in all a pretty chilled out leg, but maybe I just got lucky!
Anyway seeing family friends in Shotley tomorrow who are dropping off some things I forgot! And then it's off to Lowestoft before a big hike up to Grimsby and then Whitby. Scotland here I come!!
Video
05/07/10 - Dover to Ramsgate
Probably the easiest leg so far, only a short hop with the wind dead behind. Poled out the genoa and sat catching up with my log for most of the leg! Awful amount of shipping to begin with however which kept me on my toes but all good!

04/07/10 - Brighton to Dover
Well I have made it to Dover thats the good news. I left early in the morning to give myself the chance to make Ramsgate if the wind kicked in early. However it only kicked it at about 0830 so had already motored a fair bit. When it did kick in it was a lovely southwesterly, so kite up and off we went.
The breeze was forecast to reach force 5, and I was confident I could hold the kite in those conditions so kept on going. The waves were building more and more however as the channel closes in at Dover, and I was stuck on the helm for about 10 hours, as it was a very fine line between broaching and gybing. In the end a huge wave broached the boat, breaking the spinnaker pole, so had a bit of a drama to get that down. Lessons learnt however, and thats the reason I am out here so all good experience for me. I made and posted a video of the trip which I have now posted on youtube, check it out.

02/07/10 - Finally off, again!
The good news for the day is that I am finally on my way after the success of the J80 Europeans and the unsuccessful week I have had with problems. The last week has been incredibly frustrating, running around trying to sort autopilots and engines. The good news is the pilot is working brilliantly, and my trust is slowly being restored in my engine.
As soon as the engine is off and Seahorse digs her heels in under sail however all my worries wash away. We sailed under kite from Southampton to Chichester today and it was an absolute joy, I was in my element again. Not running around trying to troubleshoot engine issues or organise the autopilot snags while just wishing I was on the water cracking on with the trip.
I decided on doing the small hop this afternoon just to test run everything before I leave what's been invaluable shore support that I have from connections and family in Southampton. Many thanks to my Grandad for running me up to Portsmorth for the autopilot and helping me organise getting the engine fixed, life saver! Tomorrow I will leave for Brighton, then plan to go to Rye and Dover before crossing the Thames Estuary and tackling the East Coast. Back in the groove again now and hugely excited about the times ahead!

1/07/10 - Tiller Pilot problems
Before I left for Italy and the J80 Euro's I had been having some autopilot problems. The conclusion was that my course computer was a write off, so I had to order a new one. This was delivered in tme for my return, so I hoped it was simply a matter of fitting, sea trialling, calibrating and off I go. However I have now had new problems with the new computer which is a right bugger!
Being an '08 model, it was thought that software was the issue, however this has still not solved it. I am currently lookng at taking it to Raymarine in Portsmouth to see if they can solve directly, as well as, if I can get hold of them, getting a replacement sent our from the people I brought it from, no names!! Which ever solution is going to set me on my way is the quickest will be the one I go for, I want to leave! Lets go sailing!
29/06/10 - 5th at J80 Europeans on 'Team Baltic'
If you have been wondering why the tracker has been so stationary and the reason for the lack of updates over the last week then here is the answer!
Alongside the Round Britain Project I also skipper a J80 youth team run by my Founding Sponsors Baltic Wharf. Last year saw us achieve a 5th at Cowes week and a regatta win at Dartmouth Week which was a promising start for our young team. For this year we had to make a few changes to the team due to exams and took part in the J Cup which we managed to win. The Europeans was the big event for us this season however, and after our successful J Cup result we were being ambitious and looking for a top 10 finish.
The event started well and our consistant results meant we actually stayed well inside the top 10. Going into the last day we had worked ourselves up to a position that gave us a shot at 5th, and after a strong first race 5th was now ours to loose. An inside out last race went in our favour as other teams had other bad results to count, our worst so far was 14th, meaning we held onto our prized 5th place!
It was an amazing week for the team and we would all like to thanks Baltic Wharf for their continued support. Going forward to the Worlds in Dartmouth in 2012 we have a huge amount to work on as the Spanish really are a step ahead of us all. Finishing first non-spanish boat and first British boat however is a great achievement for our young team and I am extremely proud of them all. Many thanks to Henry Bagnall, 23, Ryan Gerrish, 22 and Ellie Mittler, 17, great job guys!
23/06/10 - J80 Europeans Team
Baltic
We arrived at Lake Garda on the 20th after catching a
flight early in the morning. We had to leave straight after the Round the Island
Race to get up to Gatwick. The weather was rainy on arrival but a
strong northerly was blowing. We managed to get the rig up and boat ready on the
first day which enabled us to get the weigh in and other admin out of the way
allowing us to get out training.
The practise race was yesterday which we had to retire
from with furling problems, all sorted now though. We had great pace still which
is fantastic so hopefully if we can get our heads around the venue we should
post a good result. Just sitting in the Yacht Club now waiting for the first
race of the championship today, we're all very excited about getting out on the
water, there is a strong international fleet here which should provide some very
close racing.
19/06/10 - Round the Island Race
Today was the Round the Island Race, an amazing event with over 1700 boat participating, quite a sight!! A spinnaker start in the morning sunshine was truely spectacular. We had a great start and the race tactically was very interesting.
The tide favoured our start time massively, so we ended up:
1st Contessa 26 of 7
18th in class of 55
23rd overall out of over 1600.
Seahorse is packed up for the week now as attention turns to the J80 campaign and The Europeans out in Lake Garda, flight out is early tomorrow.
15/06/10 - Team Baltic boat day
Today was spent getting the J80 'Team Baltic' ready for trailering to Lake Garda for the European's. Mast down, rudder off and everything stowed properly and taped up. Still need to wrap the keep but she's pretty much set for her 1000 mile trip! Picture
Ryan and I will be out training onboard Seahorse tomorrow for the Round the Island Race. Looking like a great breeze out in the Solent tomorrow so should be extremely productive. Weather looking light for race day though which is a shame. Hope we are back in time for our flight's early Sunday morning to Garda!
14/06/10 - Arrived into the Solent
Arrived into the Solent this afternoon. Great sail today, left at 5 this morning, bright and early to catch the tide. Got to really test the new innerforestay and small jib in some pretty strong upwind stuff which was great. Had a leak problem to deal with and some other issues on route which kept me busy but all sorted now! Just drying everything out on the dock that got a tad salty!
Tomorrow I've got to get the rig down on the J80 'Team Baltic' which we left here after our J Cup success, as well as getting her trailor ready ready for towing to Lake Garda for the Euro's. Then have to get everything off the boat for the Round the Island Race so we can be as competitive as possible, three month's worth of gear is probably going to slow us down just a little bit! I plan to hopefully get out training with Ryan to, our trimmer on 'Team Baltic' who is sailing with me in the RTI race as he has never sailed on the boat before! Hopefully upload some pictures later if I get a chance.
12/06/10 - Thank you Dartmouth!
Wow what a send off! We could not have been luckier with the weather, and to have so much support was absolutely fantastic, it means so much so thank you to everyone. I am pretty sure there was more than 20 boats following me out the river, cool!
I am currently just sitting in Portland Marina absolutely exhausted, the last few weeks have been pretty hectic and I didn't get any sleep last night. Had a great sail though, kite all the way, gybing on the shifts. (Sorry I couldn't help it!) Had a shocker round Portland though trying to get out of the tide, very frustrating night, check out the tracker!
Will try and upload some pictures later, food, tidy and sleep now!
11/06/10 - Last day on land!
Today is a day of packing up the boat and getting ready for the big day tomorrow. Everything is ready to go, food brought and sailing gear packed. Few last minute jobs to do on the boat, a quick clean to make sure she is looking good tomorrow and we will be all set.
Not sure it's sunk in yet that after 3 years, tomorrow will be the day I finally set off to sail round Britain. I have been focussing so hard on getting to this point, that now its here, I really don't know what to do with myself!
08/06/10 - Departure details and information
I have been asked a lot recently what the details are for my departure on Saturday, so I thought I would do a quick news bulletin with hopefully some useful information!
In the morning 'The Seahorse' and I will be down at Junior Sailing at RDYC, to show the kids around the boat and to talk about the project. I will then move the boat to Dartmouth pontoon at 12 when a leaving lunch takes place. This will be very casual and open to all and will run until 4 o'clock.
I will be leaving at 3 and my lead sponsors The Seahorse Restaurant are supplying Prosescco to toast me off so be sure to get a glass! Numerous boats will be following me out the river, as well as the junior sailors so be sure to grab a ride on one if you can! Give me a call if you want to ask about mooring your boat alongside Dartmouth pontoon to as we have this reserved. See you all on Saturday!
06/06/10 - J80 Team Baltic 1st of 18 at J Cup
This weekend was a resounding success for our J80 youth team Team Baltic. The 18 strong fleet provided fantastic racing for us ahead of the Europeans and to come away winning the event puts us in a strong position going forward to the European's in 2 weeks time.

Last week on land for me now before I set off around Britain, busy times but looking forward to the sailing ahead this summer!
26/05/10 - Sea trials a success
I officially 'moved in' to The Seahorse on Saturday last week and have been really enjoying living onboard with this amazing weather! Rumour has it its going to be like this all summer...
Anyway it's enabled me to crack on with all the sea trials of the new gear that's gone onboard, and calibrate all my new electronics which has been a great success. I have also been able to get out sailing a lot which is great. I am onto my final few jobs now as my list gets smaller and smaller which is great news! J Cup starts next week, so bit of work to prepare for that. We have a bit of a miss-match crew as none of us will have sailed together before the event but hopefully we will put in a good result.
19/05/10 - Tacktick Wireless Instruments come onboard as project partners
I am delighted to announce that Tacktick have come onboard the project, supplying me with a speed, depth and compass kit with triducer. Having accurate boat speed and depth readings are critical to navigation, especially if everything goes down, so it's fantastic to know I have a system that I can fully rely on. We use Wireless Tacktick Instruments on the J80 and love it, so when I was looking at replacing my instruments for this trip, they were my first port of call.
16/05/10 - Final Preperations
The Seahorse is currently out the water at the moment going under her final refit before I can finally leave! A lot is going on and I am very busy working on the boat, and organising delivery of tiller pilots, winches, transducers, instruments, liferafts, batteries, blocks, tracks and much more! Not to mention fitting it all.
Final antifoul jobs are also getting done as well as small jobs which will make my life easier onboard. Planning the departure and all the events that are happening between now and June 12th is also keeping me up into the long hours of the night but really enjoying being so busy. The J80 campaign for the summer is also coming together as well with our plans to enter a very competitive youth team into the J Cup and J80 Europeans on Lake Garda. Shame exams and other sailing projects are getting in the way for us all meaning we won't be able to prepare and train as much as we had hoped but we should still put in a decent result.
02/05/10 - Navionics come onboard as project partners
I am delighted to announce that today Navionics have come onboard the project, supplying me with electronic charts for the whole of the UK and Ireland. I will be using these charts on a laptop as my back up navigation system, with GPS position fixes and paper charts being my primary source of navigation.
27/04/10 - Work started on my new set of sails
Yesterday I started working on my new set of sails for the trip. I was very excited about the prospect of making my own sails that would take me around Britain, but also quite nervous about not messing it up! Check out some of the pictures on Flickr here.
25/04/10 - New Facebook page launched for the Round Britain Project

Yesterday we launched a new Facebook page where supporters can follow the trip and find out information about the numerous events we are holding, most notably departure day. More work needs to be done on it but we hope it will help people keep up to date with the latest pictures and blogs throughout the trip. (More)
17/04/10 - Amazing lunch at The Seahorse Restaurant
This afternoon's promotional lunch at The Seahorse Restaurant, Dartmouth was a fantastic event for all involved with the project. Mitch cooked us up and absolute treat, with a variety of different fishy dishes. The restaurant was full to the brim which is a tribute to everyone who has worked so hard.
I am extremely lucky and grateful to have 'The Seahorse' as my lead sponsors, for their enthusiasm for the project and for sharing my vision for it going forward. If you missed out this time be sure to book in for the May 28th event as there are still just a few spaces left!
15/04/10 - Riviera FM Radio Guest
Tonight I was a guest on Alan and Maggie's radio show on Riviera FM. I was on for 2 hours answering questions on the project as well as talking about how to get into sailing and other issues such as the state of English rugby! It was great fun and fascinating to see how a show works from beginning to end. Many thanks for having me guys!
9/04/10 - Radio Devon Interview with Shep and Jo!
Today I went down to Plymouth to have a chat with Shep and Jo about the Round Britain Project. They were great fun and it was fascinating to see the inner workings of local radio! Shep did call me Harry though in the introduction, I couldn't believe it! Shep's you let me down! Check out the interview on iplayer 1hr 25 mins in.
5/04/10 - New Henry Bomby Sailing logo thanks to Cherub Consultancy
As you may have seen a new logo has appeared on the top of the website. Many thanks to Simon Blogg at Cherub Consultancy for putting the logo together. He came up with a number of ideas that we played with before coming up with this one. I like it as it's simple and can easily be applied and used for a variety of different projects both for now and in the future.
We will be using the logo on clothing and also on the website as well as for promotional flyers and activities that I am involved in with my sponsors. To view the logo in large click here.
2/04/10 - Henri Lloyd come onboard as clothing partners
I am delighted to announce that Henri LLoyd have today come on board the project as the official clothing partners for the project. They will be supplying all gear from my offshore kit to team jackets worn by friends, family and supporters! My lead sponsors 'The Seahorse' are also getting all their staff 'kitted up' with jackets to wear throughout the summer and the duration of the trip!
Henri Lloyd have also agreed to help out with our J80 programme which is fantastic, so we will all be looking very smart this season with a set of 'Team Baltic' jackets that we can wear both on and off the water.
2/04/10 - Physical preparation progressing nicely!
As part of my preparation for my trip this summer I have been working hard in the gym and also on the road. Working with Dave Fuge we have worked on my strength training, especially in the core and also in my back. As I cannot stand up down below I am crouched over a lot of the time, and with a history of back problems from rugby and experience of back problems from prolonged periods on board this is something we have been working really hard on. The news for this week is that I have broken 3 of my PB's!
I have also been training on the road running. As my three peaks part of the project will be towards the end of the trip I need to work on not only creating cardio fitness but also on maintaining it throughout the trip. For this I will be taking my running shoes with me and training when I stop off in port.
01/04/10 - Kevin Thomas Electrical come onboard as Bronze Sponsors
Today Kevin Thomas Electrical came onboard the project as bronze sponsors, offering both financial and also electrical help! Kevin has offered his help in many ways to prepare for my trip, from borrowing his truck to lug gear around to going through, and teaching me, about electronics. I am also extremely grateful for there £300 contribution towards the project.
30/03/10 - OC Tracker come onboard as project partners
Great news today as OC Tracker come onboard the project. They will be providing me with a tracker for the duration of the trip so that people can follow my progress. It is very important to me that the trip is as accessible and easy to follow and so am delighted that OC have come onboard.
Clementine of Offshore Challenges said 'We try to encourage young sailors as much as possible and are delighted to support Henry's project'
OC Tracker is a self contained, battery powered device, installed in seconds that reports a yachts position from anywhere on the planet. The internal GPS computer sends the position using the Iridium satellite transceiver within the unit. Between reports the system 'sleeps' to conserve battery power. More
11/03/10 - Passed Yachtmaster exam
Last week I was away training for my Yachtmaster exam which I did over the weekend. The weather was absolutely fantastic, although cold the blue skies meant everyone had a great time and we could really make the most of the week.
We went down to Salcombe and Plymouth for the first few days, before making our way back up to Brixham and then back to Dartmouth. It was great to just get back out on the water and learnt a huge amount. Having been away for a week I am now catching up with everything and making my final preparations for 'The Seahorse' before we go on a training week of our own down to Cornwall, more to follow.
01/03/10 - Solo Racing Festival
This weekend I hope to make it down to the solo racing festival at Solent University. Lots of really interesting topics and great people there so should be a fascinating day.
01/02/10 - The Seahorse Restaurant come onboard as lead sponsors
Please find press release below announcing the lead sponsorship from The Seahorse Restaurant Dartmouth.
Press Release - 01/02/10
21/01/10 - Winners Gym and Dave Fuge come onboard the project
I am delighted to announce that Winners Gym have today decided to come onboard the project by supporting me with a gym membership up until I leave at the beginning of June. I will also be working with Personal Trainer, Dave Fuge, developing a programme that will aim to; help me be in the best shape possible before I leave, stay fit while I am away, work with the effects of sleep deprivation as well as the nutritional and energy aspects of the food I will be consuming.
Eating properly and feeling fighting fit while at sea massively helps morale, a critical factor when sailing alone. Normally fitness is lost when you are away at sea for a prolonged period of time, so we will especially be working on ways that I can maintain my fitness throughout the trip, something which will become crucial when I come to climb the three peaks towards the end of my voyage. I am very excited about working with both Dave and Winners, it adds yet another interesting aspect to the voyage and I cannot wait to get started!
30/12/09 - Short term plans for 2010
The beginning of 2010 is going to be quite a hectic one! I plan now to launch again on the 5th Jan after my final refit for the voyage. I will then head down to the Helford River on a week long voyage to snag any problems and settle into a routine that works for me.
I will then immediately be heading off to the London Boat Show to meet with my sponsors and purchase anything that comes up from the training trip. I will inevitably have a huge job list to work through after this too. On the 16th Jan Dee Caffari is doing a talk at the RDYC which should be fantastic, really looking forward to hearing about her adventures and getting some tips on how to work this whole public speaking thing!
I have my first skippering job in the Carribean, BVI's, for a week in February, and then my Yachtmaster practical exam on the 1st to the 5th of March. Work needs to be done on the J80 in this time to and there are lots of publicity events planned also with my new title sponsor, to be announced shortly!
Hope you all had a great Christmas and hears to a great 2010!

19/11/09 - Passed Yachtmaster theory exam
Over the past few weeks I have been revising hard for my Yachtmaster theory exam, which I am delighted to say that today, I passed! I hope to take my practical exam in the new year. Completing my Yachtmaster is what this trip is all about for me. Through the qualification I am learning about navigation, meteorology and much more, and its fantastic for me to know that my trip will be putting into practise absolutely everything that I have learnt and more.
15/11/09 - Learning to splice rope with English Braids
Last Wednesday, Roger from English Braids, my new rope supplier for the project, came down to the yard to teach me about rope splicing, rope care and maintenance. Having never done anything like that before it was a fantastic learning experience for me. I learnt all different types of splicing from 3 strand to braid on braid and even dynema... more
03/11/09 - Gauss Ltd become Around Britain Challenge product partner
This week has been extremely productive for the project, work has progressed massively on the boat as I slowly work my way from my 60+ job list.
On top of that I am delighted to announce today that Gauss Ltd have come onboard the project as a product partner, supplying me with one of their fantastic new Dreamseeker sleeping bags to keep me warm and dry when training onboard this winter and throughout my adventure next summer.. more

12/10/09 - Gerunuk taken out of the water
On Thursday I will be taking Gerunuk out of the water to go up to Baltic Wharf for a few weeks to carry out some refit work. She will be relaunched end of November early December time, going down to Darthaven Marina for the remaining of the winter season. I am extremely grateful to Darthaven for their help in providing me with a fantastic discount for this winters storage.
05/10/09 - A summer summary
This summer has been very successful in means of getting out on the water training as well as participating in some racing. Soon after my A levels finished I took part in the Classic Channel Regatta which left from my home port of Dartmouth. Sailing on ‘Gerunuk’ my Contessa 26, double handed with a friend of mine, we managed to win both the 110 mile race to Paimpol in France as well as our class (modern classics) overall.
Work off the water has also progressed massively. Due to the influx of more sponsors both product and financial, the project has really started to come to life.... more
01/10/09 - New Gas Cooker Installed
Today was the day that my new gas cooker was fitted, courtesy of Gas Check Marine. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dave Brooks from Gas Check Marine for his generosity and enthusiasm for the project, and for coming onboard the project as a product sponsor. When I first met Dave over a year ago when I had little but a dream he said to me that when I get a boat he would replace it with a brand new cooker... more
24/09/09 - Talk for my old 6th form assembly
Today I went back to my old school to give a talk as part of their 'you only live once, so live it' themed assembly. It was great to go back and see my old teachers as I didn't get to see them for results day due to taking part in the J Cup. The talk went well, although I was extremely nervous, apparently it didn't show though which is great! More practice needed I think, which I am sure I will get!
20/09/09 - Catch up
Sorry for not updating the news much this summer, the summer was an extremely busy time for me, I sailed every single day but 2 and since the end of Dartmouth week I thought I might have some time off from racing or doing deliveries to work on Gerunuk and maybe go on a trip, round Eddystone Lighthouse and back was my intention. However I have still been kept busy by deliveries, to and from the Southampton boat show which was great as well as working on the ‘off the water’ side of the project trying to fill the last two gold sponsorship spots.
Sadly my tiller pilot onboard has also decided to pack in so that has put a halt on all single handed endeavours until fixed or replaced, subject to funding! With the winter rapidly approaching I will now be focussing my attention to furthering my sail making skills by working at the sail loft as well as finishing off my Yachtmaster. I am also looking for a place to keep Gerunuk on the water a bit longer this winter to make the most of the weather we have at the moment! More news to follow...
Dartmouth Week - 1st Overall in Sportsboat Class
Last week was Dartmouth Week, the UK's second largest regatta after Cowes. After a disappointing end to Cowes we were keen to make up for it with a win at our home event! The first race went well and we got off to a great start by winning the first race, which along with a 2nd and a 4th put us leaders after the first day.
Day 2 was cancelled due to strong wind conditions, however day 3 welcomed us with a great breeze for some close racing. Consistency proved the way and we came back in satisfied with three 2nd's posted on the score sheet. The last day was about finishing the job and we did just that, and I mean just! With a 4th and a 3rd we won the regatta by 1 point from 'Jasmine', a fellow J80. We were however winning the last race until an unfortunate wind shift meant we over stepped the layline to the finish, resulting in a nervy final few minutes to our regatta!
Cowes Week - 5th of 21 and 1st non local boat at our first Cowes Week!
Last week we competed on ‘Team Baltic’ Baltic Wharf’s J80, with a youth team for our first ever Cowes Week. We were all extremely excited about the prospect and opportunity we had been given and all wanted to make the most of it. And on the first day we did just that, winning our first race out of a 21 strong fleet. (more)
12/07/09 - 1st overall in modern classic's class at Classic Channel Regatta!
Classic Channel Regatta Blog
Channel Race - 123.7 miles, 17 hours, 1st
Both Simon and I were extremely excited about the race and crossing ahead. After the numerous weather delays we were itching to get going and leave land behind us. We found ourselves in a bad position for the start, starting 1 minute late. This may not sound much, but we ended up winning the 17 hour, 120 mile race by only 1min and 19 seconds so it could have cost us dear! (more)

18/06/09 - Launch Day
Today 'Gerunuk' was put in the water, watched by friends and family, sponsors, and everyone who has helped to get the project this far. It was a long day, with lots of press things to do as well, but she floats which is the main thing and is now nessled down on her mooring on the river, thank you the Royal Dart Yacht Club. There are numerous photos of the day on the flickr account and also a video link attached here of the Spotlight interview.
16/06/09 - Preparing for launch!
Today was a great day, the day after my last exam and a day spent down on Gerunuk getting her ready for launching on Thursday. When I arrived the mast had already been put up by the guys from at Baltic, and she had already started to come to life. After a winter's worth of dust was hovered away her character shone through and the jobs could commence.
Dad ran around doing his 'Dad hand' jobs and Mum cracked on with some impressive cleaning work. A big thank you to Ryan for coming down and helping to, doing a great job on the prop! See photos for proof, a fine feat I am sure you will agree removing 4 seasons of antifoul! For pictures of the days events click here!
June 18th Launch Date
On the 18th June a small launch party will take place to launch Gerunuk for her 2009 adventures. The event will be a thank you to everyone who has got the project this far, whether its my sponsors, friends and family or people who have just got hold of my adventure with such enthusiasm. She will be put in the water at Baltic Wharf in Totnes at 12:30 before making our way down the river onto her mooring where she will live for the summer.
June 2009 - Devon Life Article
A big thank you to Sue Swan for the article she wrote in Devon Life this month (June issue) be sure to pick up a copy and have a read!
10/01/09 - First race onboard Gerunuk planned
I have just provisionally entered the Classic Channel Regatta July 4th - 11th 2009 starting and finishing here in my home port of Dartmouth. There will be two days of racing here in Dartmouth, before the Classic Channel Race sails to Paimpol where further inshore races will be held. We will then sail on to St Peter Port, and compete in the Round Sark race before heading back to Dartmouth. The Classic Channel Regatta is open to Bermudian and gaff-rigged classic yachts launched before the end of 1975 and more recent 'Spirit of Tradition' yachts. Gerunuk was built in 1969 and of a Folkboat design which therefore makes her eligible to compete.
This will provide a focus for my 2009 season and will be a fantastic opportunity for me to put into practice my navigational skills as well as getting in some great racing. I hope to go with a 'youth crew' of 3, more information to follow.
10/12/08 - £300 grant from Kingswear Combined Charities Trustees
I would just like to thank Kingswear Combined Charities Trustees for their generous grant of £300 towards the essential refit work of Gerunuk this winter.
I need to carry out essential refit work, such as replace the safety equipment as well as purchase hardware such as organisers and clutches to bring all lines aft and make Gerunuk safer and more suitable for single handed sailing. This grant will help massivley towards this work and I am absolutly delighted to have the village where I live getting behind the project.
07/12/08 - Newspaper cut outs
Below is an example of the newspaper cut outs I collected after the Press Release of Baltic Wharf's founding sponsorship. I hope that this is a good example of how I hope to pay back sponsors through media exposure as well as branding and more...
03/12/08 - Mike's Smokehouse to donate £4 for every hamper I can sell in the run up to Christmas!
I am pleased to announce that Grant and Sasha of ‘Mike’s smokehouse’ are teaming up with the Henry Bomby Sailing - Round Britain Project - The Seahorse Restaurant, Dartmouth.
They have kindly agreed to donate £4 to the challenge for every gift hamper bought through me in the run up to Christmas, and the time leading up to my challenge. This is fantastic opportunity for me to raise enough money to carry out a much needed refit of “Gerunuk” to make her more seaworthy and suitable for single handed sail training next summer more...
7/11/08 - Press Release

29/10/08 - Boat delievered to Totnes, Dartmouth
Yesterday I went to Brixham and sailed Gerunuk back to Dartmouth and up to Totnes for her survey later this week. The owner had very trustingly let us sail her under his insurance in order to get the survey carried out while he was away in France. If all goes well she will be kept on the hard for the winter at the Baltic Wharf boat yard where I will be able to carry out some work on her. She is in very good condition already, however some organising needs to be done with the lines, bringing them aft to make suitable for single handed sailing, as well as more...
24/10/08 - Founding Sponsor for Henry Bomby Sailing - Round Britain Project - The Seahorse Restaurant, Dartmouth FOUND!
I am pleased to annouce that after over a year since I first started the project and came up with the idea for the journey I have recently signed a deal with Baltic Wharf boat yard in Totnes for a loan of £7000 over a 2 year period to enable me to buy my dream boat, a beautiful Contessa 26 called Gerunuk. This deal has helped solve my catch 22 situation (can’t find sponsors without boat, can’t buy boat without sponsors) and has given the project an unbelievable boost. This Wednesday I will be sailing Gerunuk back from Brixham where she is currently moored to Dartmouth for a survey to be carried out. A deposit for her has been paid and the project is full steam ahead! More information to follow shortly on immediate plans, how I managed to secure sponsorship!
28/09/08 - Promotional Film Making
Last weekend I spent my time putting together a short film with Tom Balch a filmmaker, educator and photographer, to be used as a promotional tool for attracting sponsors. It was a really interesting in sight to the world of filmmaking, and I have to say after I got over the initial embarrassment of talking to camera in the street I did really enjoy the experience. You will be able to tell which takes I did first and which I did later on as I did slowly get the hang of not looking and sounding like a boring idiot! I believe overall we took over 2 hours worth of footage, with I hope some great shots of us racing on the Sunday morning in the Plymouth Autumn Series, which will be cut down to just 2 minutes for the website, and a 5 minute version for presentations. The video will be up on the website in the next few weeks after editing is finished.
I would just like to thank Tom for all his efforts coming down to help me with this and hope you all check out his stunning new website, www.tombalch.com
17/07/08 - Rugby Tour
Having arrived back from South Africa the world seems really abnormal! I mean days go past without climbing mountains or being on safari! How odd! It was one of those trips that I will never forget, for the Year 13s it was there last trip and involvement with the school before they leave for Uni or on their Gap Years and it was great having everyone together on such a fantastic trip... 9/07/08 - Cork Delivery Trip
I am sitting on a bench in the Port of Cork, Ireland, munching on a bacon banquette early on a Saturday morning. Last Wednesday, my Dad came home from work and called me upstairs to let me know there was yachtswomen, Kathy, had called into Dartmouth for shelter from the unassailable conditions found on the south coast last week and was looking for crew for a delivery to Cork for Cork week on her Arcona 370... Mark Simpson of 'By The Dart' magazine has decided to follow my challenge in his monthly community magazine and business directory for Dartmouth and local villages.
21/06/08- 10th in the J80 Nationals!
Last weekend I competed in a crew of 5 in the J80 Nationals. We achieved 10th place which is a great achievement. After a good first day we were lying in 6th place due to our consistant results, however due to a poor second day we slipped down to 12th. By the final day we again put in 2 good races to put ourselves into the top 10! For more information and pictures click the links!
9/06/08
Today I passed my driving test at my first attempt with 4 minors! Many Thanks to Christine at Christines School of Motoring for getting me through!
2/06/08 - Great sailing and climbing adventure in Contessa 26 Menai Piper
I have recently been in contact with Steve, owner of Contessa 26 Menai Piper. They are just setting off on a 4-6 month tour of the Scottish Hebrides doing as much sailing and climbing as they can fit in. They are both recent graduates and have taken unpaid time off work to fulfill this ambition. Please visit their website for more information on what is a great adventure!
26/05/08 - New Flickr Account for viewing project pictures
I have just made a new Flickr account. Here you will be able to view all the pictures used on the website and more. This is the easiest way of making a gallery to view the pictures in large, and I hope it adds a new dimension to the website.
13/05/08 - Manna from Devon Support Adventure
Manna from Devon - Nutritional Cookery Courses
I am delighted to say that local cookery school, 'Manna from Devon' have offered their generous services to support me in my trip, as well as joining me on my trip up the three peaks! When undertaking an endurance event like this it will be very important that I eat well in order to maintain stamina. However, space and time for cooking will be very limited. The Manna from Devon Cooking School will be helping me to plan menus for the journey and will work with me to develop simple yet nutritional meals that I can make without being distracted from the sailing.
It is also important that I stay motivated throughout the trip and having something to look forward too each day will be a great help. When Sir Robin Knox Johnston first sailed around the world he had a glass of whisky each evening but I will have a supply of Manna from Devon Double Chocolate Brownies; not eating more than one a day could be a challenge in itself.
12/05/08 - The Artemis Transat Start Day Part 2
Yesterday was an incredibly inspirational day, being out on the dock and looking over onto the pontoon at the boats and skippers before they set out into the Atlantic was incredible, there was a real buzz and an amazing atmosphere as the boats left, setting out on an incredibly tough journey in harsh and Baltic conditions, sailing upwind to Boston or Marbelhead for the 40’s encountering shipping lanes, icebergs and fog with little sleep and no let up. Pictures. It should be a great race and can be followed here.
10/05/08 - The Artemis Transat Start Day...
Tomorrow I will be driving down to Plymouth to watch the start of The Artemis Transat. I have never been to the start of an ocean race such as this and cannot wait to get my eyes on the machines that will be tackling the North Atlantic over the coming weeks, more information and pictures will follow shortly...
29/04/08 - Project Support
I now have 3 supporters of the project, there generosity, belief and enthusiasm at the early stages has really helped me get the project off the ground, get a website up and running, and help show to others that this project means business!
